29 September 2012: Mikhail Bulgakov

29 Sep

Today I am grateful to Mikhail Bulgakov. My favourite novel out of his is of course The Master and Margarita, but I have recently re-read his short stories from the time of the Civil War of the 1920s in the Soviet Union, and his novellas, such as The Fatal Eggs – which includes one of the most touching descriptions of a frog dying on a biologist’s table with its guts under the microscope. Being a medical doctor, I am sure Bulgakov had to carry out these sort of experiments. However, his literary work shows his true attitude to it.
